A PRIVATE
TOUR OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL
The
breath-taking Sistine Chapel is widely regarded as the Vatican's greatest
attraction, and is undeniably the busiest. But for many the impossibly long
queues and large crowds - three million visitors come here each year - can
somewhat dampen the experience of viewing Michelangelo's iconic masterpiece.
Next year, a
privileged few can see the chapel and the Vatican's huge collection of historic
works on a new and exclusive out-of-hours tour guided by art historians. The
experts will give context to the vast collection of ancient sculptures, and
explain the meaning behind Michelangelo's Last Judgement (pictured) and
Perugino's The Giving of Keys.
Focusing on
the Renaissance, which saw the likes of Raphael and Michelangelo return Rome to
its former glory in the 15th and 16th centuries, the five-day trip also takes
in sights including Nicholas V Chapel and the famous Stanze di Raffaello. This
collection of rooms was built by Nicholas V, who, after seeing Raphael's paintings,
ordered that existing artworks be replaced with work by the young painter.
There's also
the chance to see Villa Madama, designed by Raphael and with works of art that
include a frieze of cupids by Guilo Romano, and the 15th-century Palazzo della
Cancelleria, which is usually closed to the public.
Leading a
tour (max 25 people) from 18 to 22 March 2013 is Michael Douglas-Scott, a
lecturer in the History of Art at the University of London. Clare Ford-Wille, a
lecturer at the University of London, the National Gallery and Victoria &
Albert Museum, leads a group from 11 to 15 November 2013
